Manufactured in China, this quantum computer is SpinQ Gemini Lab, the latest one-stop quantum computing experimental platform developed by SpinQ, a pioneering company in quantum computing technology. Its successful export to Colombia underscores SpinQ's technological leadership in quantum technologies, signifying the expanding global influence of China's quantum computing advancements across international markets.
Julián Rincón, professor of theoretical physics at Universidad de los Andes, remarked, "This is not merely a 'faster' traditional computer; it represents a fundamentally new way of processing information and executing computations based on the principles of quantum physics."
Founded in 1948, Universidad de los Andes is Colombia's highest-ranked university and one of the most prestigious institutions in South America. Known for its innovation-driven research and education, the university consistently maintains excellence, with nearly 150 research groups recognized by Colciencias (the Administrative Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation in Colombia), predominantly in the social sciences, mathematics, physics, and engineering.

Quantum computing has long been an important research focus at Universidad de los Andes. Previously, the research team faced limitations due to the absence of an actual quantum computer for experimentation, significantly restricting theoretical validation.
Additionally, researchers urgently needed a practical experimental environment to run and debug quantum algorithms efficiently and identify areas for improvement. Without access to real quantum hardware, effectively evaluating algorithm performance has been challenging, posing a significant obstacle to overcoming technological bottlenecks.
With the introduction of the SpinQ Gemini Lab, these critical needs can now be effectively met.
SpinQ Gemini Lab: One-stop Quantum Computing Experimental Platform
SpinQ Gemini Lab is based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) computing principles and incorporates advanced radio-frequency technology and miniaturized quantum systems, weighing only 18.5 kg.
Professor Julián Rincón highlighted one of its key advantages: "It operates at room temperature, making it highly suitable for educational purposes. It's easy to assemble and allows for straightforward verification of fundamental quantum theories."

The SpinQ Gemini Lab features an open chassis design, clearly displaying critical internal components such as the experimental sample, magnet module, homogeneity control module, radio-frequency control module, and main control unit.
This transparent design provides an enhanced interactive operational experience, visualizing abstract quantum concepts and enabling seamless theoretical-to-practical transitions for professors and students at Universidad de los Andes.
In addition to its innovative open design and easy maintenance, the SpinQ Gemini Lab supports various semi-open exploratory experiments, including quantum optimization algorithms, quantum simulation, and optimal control experiments.
It also serves as a highly flexible quantum research platform capable of quantum computation, quantum dynamics simulation, quantum control research, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy studies.
These extensive experimental capabilities position the SpinQ Gemini Lab as a vital tool for future quantum research at Universidad de los Andes.
SpinQ Gemini Lab is equipped with a wide range of built-in quantum computing experiments.
Quantum optics professor Alejandra Valencia highly praised the capabilities of the SpinQ Gemini Lab, stating, “With this quantum computer, we can now download equations from the internet and give them concrete meaning. This means the research conducted over many years in quantum optics labs is no longer limited to theoretical imagination; these equations are no longer merely abstract mathematical expressions.”
In upcoming quantum research activities, the research team can directly manipulate quantum systems through a visual interface to implement quantum gates and utilize these customized quantum gate operations in quantum circuit experiments to achieve quantum computing tasks.

This SpinQ Gemini Lab will be utilized to advance interdisciplinary collaboration, further integrating knowledge across physics, computer science, chemistry, and engineering. Professor Valérie Gauthier from the Department of Systems and Computing Engineering emphasized the importance of acquiring the SpinQ Gemini Lab: "We are delighted to showcase Colombia's first quantum computer. We hope students will leverage it extensively for quantum computing research, fostering their interest in fields such as post-quantum cryptography."
The delivery of the SpinQ Gemini Lab represents not only a milestone in Colombia's quantum research history but also a significant advancement in SpinQ's mission to drive global quantum technology development. Moving forward, SpinQ aims to introduce its quantum computing products and services to more countries and regions, promoting deeper understanding and exploration of quantum technologies among learners and researchers worldwide.
